Cancelled, dumped and told to retire all in one morning in Hollywood, our heroine, the former star of Morgan Sidney, the Laughing PI, thinks it can't get any worse until her agent tricks her into working on some real low end, Loserville production where everybody smokes all the time and drinks martinis between scenes. No special effects, no car chases, just actors she's never heard of playing scenes. And her co-stars! Who are these guys? Sophisticated, witty, and sexy, the kind of men you wouldn't mind a bit doing a nude scene with, but for some reason in these movies there's no humping. All they do is kiss. But after a martini or two, kissing these guys (and our heroine makes it her business to kiss them all) is better than sex. No kidding. It's all great fun, even if it is guaranteed to ruin her career. So what's going on? Nobody makes movies like this anymore. And where the Hell are they getting all these unfiltered Chesterfields? So what happens if the guy you're crazy about turns out to be somebody you've probably watched on Turner Classic Movies? And you're pretty sure (if only you'd paid more attention in history class) that it's the middle of the Great Depression and World War II is on its way. Does any of that matter if you're in love for the first time in your life?

Characters well-done, story very different, but interesting.
I loved the fantasy story, but it must be read carefully to pick up and appreciate the subtle, sometimes caustic and mostly quite funny hints sprinkled through out the book.I spent Chapter10 laughing and I don't laugh easily!!! I loved the ending!

A Rogue A Pirate and A Dry Martini Marcy Casterline 9781451500516 Books Reviews

Another great find! The book was fast, funny, and just a blast to read. I love the awakening to a new reality that the cynical heroine experiences in spite of herself. Couldn't put the book down, and loved the perfect ending! Fans of the Thin Man will especially enjoy this romp thru time.
This book easily meets my criteria for a good read---I felt like I was there and I wondered what would happen next. But there is so much more. This is the second book written by Marcy that I have read. The books, the stories, are completely different. However, in this book she takes chances with her writing and succeeds in writing in a very distinctive way. The best analogy I can think of is Alice in Wonderland in that I felt like I was going on the journey with her. While reading I made guesses about all the goings on. The main character is puzzled and I felt like I was trying to figure out the puzzle. I tried to see if I could figure it out before the character did. Loved the last line in the book and all that it implies. Great way to end it and leaves possibility for more adventures for the author to share.

Speaking of the author, Marcy brought her knowledge of the entertainment industry to the book. I like the time period too. It was a time when acting and writing skill mattered. A time before special effects. Movies from years gone by affect me more than the movies of today. The author brings back the good old days. This book is for everyone for if you were not alive during that time you get a taste of it. If you were around then, the book is a delightful reminder.

She gave her book validity and you can learn about how things were done back then as opposed to now. Her character has a lot of humor in her and she brought out some other characters' humor as well. There is a playfulness to this book. It entertains. An important focus in the book is the reality for actresses over forty that the amount of work available for them lessens. That is still true today although I hope it is getting better. That is a good societal issue that the author very deftly put into her book.

I like the word deft. It describes Marcy's writing, especially with this book. Also deft means dexterous and she has certainly done that with A Rogue, A Pirate, and A Dry Martini. What makes a good book is not just feeling I was there and want to know what happens next. A good book is also one in which you wonder what the author will write next and how she will write it. Keep on writing, Marcy and thank you.
I am a big fan of authors who dare to go "off the board" and create a work that doesn't fit into a predictable genre, as Marcy Casterline does. Her heroine is a cancelled TV star trapped in our dismal current day where romance is long dead and mediocrity (or worse) reigns supreme in movies and television. How many of us have longed for an escape back in time? Reminiscent of Woody Allen's, Purple Rose of Cairo, she finds her way back to the golden age of Hollywood in the 1930's. Along the way, she learns about life and wrestles with the emotional turmoil all women feel as they endeavor to balance love, family, career and personal accomplishment.

Reading a bit about Ms. Casterline's own colorful life, I feel both the presence of and the deep love for her late husband interwoven into the three male leads that is both moving and touching. For the majority of us however, who will never meet that one in a million love, I personally prefer endings to books where the heroine must find meaning and direction beyond the love of a man. But for those of you that want to escape reality and fade off into the sunset for a while, then this book is a must read!
After five years of playing Morgan Sidney on TV, the show has been canceled, leaving the star out of work. Luckily, she saved up some money and will be okay even if she has to move to Peoria. But just when her luck seems on a downward spiral, she steps through a stage door and is suddenly starring in not one but three movies with three incredibly handsome costars who are all great kissers. She can't believe her luck and is having the time of her life, even if things seem a little odd on the set. Soon, however she'll have to make the choice of going back to her old life or going back to the movie set and a whole different way of life.

"A Rogue, A Pirate, and a Dry Martini" is a very quick, quirky, entertaining book. Readers will discover what is going on long before our (unnamed) heroine does, but like her they should just sit back and go along for the ride. This isn't the kind of book you want to think too much about (there are way too many plot holes to do that), but it's still a very enjoyable read - much like the movies of the 1930s the book celebrates. For me the best part of the book is when our heroine enters the soundstage and is pulled into the world of old-time movies. Each of the three movies she's filming sound like a lot of fun, and who wouldn't want to be surrounded by handsome leading men. Author Marcy Casterline does an excellent job of not only blurring the line between current times and the 1930s, but also the actions of the characters off and on set. Often the dialogue off the set continues what was happening on the set - a hard act to pull off but Casterline does it beautifully. Casterline knows her way around a movie set, something she uses to full advantage in this book. She also has some pointed remarks not only about today's movies versus old movies, but today's actors (the word actress no longer seems to exist to our narrator's chagrin), versus those of the past. By the end of the book, I felt like renting a movie from days gone by (preferably one with Cary Grant) and reveling in the days when movies were simply about acting, not special effects.

"A Rogue, A Pirate, and a Dry Martini" is a love story, but only between two people but for old-time movies.
